Noise-canceling headphones can be used to block distracting ambient noise during experiments.

If you want to require your subjects to wear noise-canceling headphones during your experiment, follow these rules:

  1. Provide an alcohol wipe so the subject can wipe down the headphones if they choose.
  2. Simply turn the headphones on without playing any actual sound—sound is not required for the noise-cancellation to take effect.
  3. Turn the headphones off after each use to conserve batteries.
  4. If the batteries run out on a pair of headphones, bring the battery to the lab manager for recharging or disposal.
